His original oil painting of seven Common Goldeneye drakes cutting a wake through open water next to an icy edge was chosen from entries sent from across the country. The image, titled, “The Magnificent Seven”, will be used as the Iowa Ducks Unlimited Print of the Year for 2009-2010 and will be exchanged with Ducks Unlimited chapters across the United States. Being named Iowa’s Print of the Year Artist is a very sought-after achievement. “I was almost overwhelmed two years ago when I was first named Artist of the Year and this time is no different. I am honored to be included in such great company with all the past artists. To have my name associated with another title is something I’m very proud of.” Maurer commented.
Maurer has the distinct honor of becoming one of Iowa’s most accomplished artists with his contributions to Iowa Ducks Unlimited. He has won the Iowa Duck Stamp competition three times since first entering in 2001. His back to back win in the 2001 and 2002 duck stamp competition has never been duplicated in the thirty-eight year history of the contest. Maurer won his third duck stamp and first Artist of the Year in 2007 which is another first in the history of Iowa Ducks Unlimited. “I grew up hunting ducks and geese, fishing, and hiking in the Platte River Valley in Nebraska. I really appreciate everything Ducks Unlimited does for waterfowl conservation and if my artwork can help support continuing conservation efforts I’m pleased to be a part of it.” Maurer adds.

Sioux City artist Darren Maurer entered his rendition of Common Goldeneyes into the 2009/2010 Iowa Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year Competition held February 14th in Des Moines, Iowa, and came out with top honors. The win is Maurer’s second in the coveted Artist of the Year Competition. His first Artist of the Year honor came in 2007 when he also prestigiously earned his third Iowa Duck Stamp that same year.
